Highlights from the Current week and More....
Tuesday, September 22, 2009, 7-9 p.m.: the Outside/Inside Reading Group discusses the great book by Peter Matthiessen (I consider it to be deservingly in the running for "the great American novel"), Shadow Country. If you couldn't read it in time for this discussion, go out and find a copy and read it anyway.
Thursday, September 24, 7-9 p.m. Contemporary Issues.a discussion focussed on Iran, and in particular the article from the New York Review of Books called "Divided Iran on the Eve." Copies of the article are still available at the Cafe Domenico. Events this week in Iran only make this discussion more relevant and urgent. Facilitated by Ken Mazlen. Like the Third Thursday Salon, this group gathers at Celeste Friend's home, 37 Emerson Ave. For directions call 725-5987.
Mark your calendars: Wednesday, September 30, 7:30 p.m. "Life In Occupied Palestine," - a one hour documentary film by a young Jewish American film maker, followed by discussion led by Ed Kinane, a Syracuse based peace and social justice activist recently returned form a sojourn in Palestine/Israel. A chance to gain some insights on this hugely complex and globally crucial issue not afforded us by mainstream news coverage.
Correction to last week's TOS emailing: The episode of CameraWar.TV I pointed to as being the final episode was not in fact the last one. I believe that as of yesterday, all episodes of the one year-long segmented documentary are at last posted. In the penultimate episode, Lech, the film maker, refers to Orin and me as "American Revolutionaries.," which is what he introduced as in Alba, Italy in 2006 where the filming of Camerawar began. This is largely, I suspect, for the European audience who mostly see his films. He posts a list on the screen of corporate chain businesses Orin and I do not patronize, which is not completely accurate, although certainly we try to avoid them. I am interested in how others react to Lech's so dubbing us, especially those who have watched all or most of CameraWar. In what sense does he mean that we are "revolutionary?" Anyone interested in offering your reflections on this?
