Imagining America (www.imaginingamerica.org) is a national consortium of colleges and universities committed to public scholarship in the arts, humanities, and design. It promotes scholarly and creative work that is jointly planned and carried out by institutions of higher learning and community partners, thereby fostering connections, based on humanities and the arts, between academic institutions and their surrounding communities. Hamilton College became a member of the consortium in 2008.
Imagining America at The Other Side offers a venue for teachers and scholars to present their work to the larger community. We seek presentations that are appropriate for a mixed audience, many of whose members have college degrees but few of whom are currently students. Talks should be scholarly but not academic, designed for a general audience eager for edification but not necessarily well versed in the subject at hand. Ideal papers will strike a balance between being rich in intellectual content and yet not presuming much background knowledge of their subject. Talks, and especially their titles, should be designed to attract a wide audience by piquing people’s interest in the topic.
